Articles of Faith/Video of the Day: Describe God

Today marks Easter Sunday - a day on which the Christian faith holds that Jesus rose from the dead to promise eternal life to his followers. But for others who believe in God, God is… well - God is..

Archived from March 13, 2009

The video below is a discourse about the reality of people’s beliefs, Sufi Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs and others. What is God? Who is God? What is his nature? What is his form? Is he everywhere? Is he nowhere? The Bible says his name is Yahweh meaning “I am.” Why do we feel we must know everything about our creator?
why not embrace the mystery of God?

Video of the Day: Children and the Psychology of White Supremecy

This is sad but fortunately fixable. ABC’s John Stossel shows a group of children a set of pictures of men of different races - one of whom is the Oklahoma City bomber Timothy Mcveigh. These are the results.

Video of the Day Slam Poetry Feature: 4 Walls

Featured at both Waxing Poetically and Art from the Outskirts

Enter the wham bam world of slam poetry! From the beaten path of the “beat” generation of the 1960s and Alan Ginsberg to the soulful cries of James Brown in the 70’s, Public Enemy in the 80s and the capricious coffeehouse wordplay of folk-influenced artists of the 90s such as Jewel and and jazzy, cultural upstarts like Arrested Development, Spoken word or “slam poetry” has arguably snatched the new millennium by the proverbial throat and thrust itself into the semi-mainstream consciousness . Still, with prolific voices like Saul Williams, Beau Sia and Ishle Park crooning and spittooning their words like arrows from slings into both the willing and reluctant hearts of their listeners, the slam family may have much more art to impart before quite poetically speaking, all is said and done.

The following piece is from a documentary of the slam poetry movement entitled 4 Walls
featuring Carlton “S.T.A.R.R.” Releford, a slam poetry artist from Knoxville, Tennessee.

Produced and directed by George Washington Rogers, IV. Executive Producers: Wash Rogers, Brian Greer, Kenneth Stephens. Editor: Brian Greer. Copyright 2007 Brass Knuckles Productions. For more information, please visit www.4wallsfilm.com.

Special Video Feature: A Salute to Homeboy Industries

Father Gregg Boyle has been working as a priest in L.A. County since 1984, He has seen gang warfare at its worst. In a city with over 80,000+ gang members and 1,100 gangs he sought to create Homeboy Industries. With the motto, “Nothing stops a bullet like a job!” Since 1992 Homeboy Industries aims to give hope to those gang members feeling utterly hopeless by hiring the unhireable in labor jobs and service jobs and has even started a gang tattoo removal program. Homeboy’s headquarters was also recently featured on the MTV reality series T.I.’s Road to Redemption.

In a nation in which social betterment is too often bundled with a political party or when money seems capriciously thrown at problems rather than put toward building new foundations, (as some conservative thinkers might decry) Father Boyle’s mission to live
a life dedicated to leaving so many young lives with so much more optimism and opportunity than the people in this clip seem to have had in many years is a rare treasure. Waxing Poetically salutes Father Greg Boyle and all those at Homeboy Industries for their tireless efforts toward making this world a little better (if not a lot better) with their amazing work.
