This is likely the most famous photograph that the National Geographic every put on their cover. Taken by Steve McCurry in the eighties, This 12 year old girl became one of the most recognizable faces in the world without her even knowing it. What is even more interesting is that Steve had no idea what her name was. Her identity was only discovered in 1992. Her name was discovered to be Sharbat Gula. Some twenty years after the photo was taken, Steve decided that he wanted to find her again. The only was he was to recognize the girl was with her bright green eyes. He did successfully find the girl, now a woman who is married with three children. As the picture below shows, life in Afghanistan is not one of the easiest to live. - Photos that Changed the World
