Weekend Philosophy: Consciousness Drives the Universe

In 2002, I decided to take a course under the assumption it was an astronomy course and although I have since forgotten the name of the course, it was my introduction to quantum physics theory. It is a theory in science that energy at the smallest levels is not a continuous, solid thing but it is a series of vibrations and fragmented patterns t and codes. Unlike earlier scientific theory is does not hold that the Universe is made only of atoms with the space in between being empty. It is however, shown to be particles and atoms held together by energy. Because thoughts are created by electrochemical triggers in the brain and are thus a part of the same energy force so to say, this video proposes that our thoughts and beliefs, ideas and prayers are not useless, feel-good exercises but the mind and body’s instinctive and willful participation in the space around us.

Photo of the Day: The Cone Nebula

A nebula is an elaborate cluster of stars that cannot be seen by the naked eye and only captured by high-powered telescope.

Articles of Faith: Five Short Mystical Poems by Kabir (1440-1518)

Digital Photomanipulation:The Sky is Painting by Michael LaPenna

Today, this blog’s weekly quest to nourish the soul brings five poems by India’s beloved poet and spiritual seeker Kabir (1440-1518). Kabir poems have been described as something of a bridge or lingua franca between the worlds of Hinduism, Islam and Christianity in that they draw not from religious, ritual but a universal goal to attain an absolute truth with which the reader can draw and glean a fuller understand of himself. There are still other moments in his poetry in which for all its mystical depth and philosophical indulgence, Kabir’s poetry is quite funny and places his work in a kind of awkwardly appropriate tango in between the writings of Khalil Gibran and William Carlos Williams in the creative energy field that is the history of poetry.

“THE SMART DOGS RAN OFF”

I sat one day with a priest
who expounded on the doctrine
of hell.

I listened to him for hours,
then he asked me
what I thought of
all he said.

And I replied,

That doctrine seems an inhumane cage;
no wonder
the smart dogs
ran off.

“A Man with Amnesia”

With a begging bowl in hand
a man with amnesia
knocks on his own door.

My guru cured me
of that profound illness:

God asking God
for forgiveness
or alms.

“See If They Wet Their Pants”

The words, Guru, Swami, Super Swami, Master, Teacher, Murshid, Yogi, Priest, Bishop,

most of those sporting such a title are
just peacocks.

The litmus test is:
hold them upside down
over a cliff for a few hours.
If they don’t wet their pants

maybe you found
a real one.

“Visiting Holy Shrines”

If you circumambulated
every holy shrine
in the world
ten times,

it would not get you to heaven
as quick

as controlling
your anger.

“An Intelligent Rich Person”

I don’t think there is such a thing as
an intelligent mega-rich
person.

For who with a fine mind can look
out upon this world
and hoard

what can nourish
a thousand
souls.

Zimbabwe’s Useless Dollar as a Comparison Point

A 40-year-old teacher resorts to selling food on the street because his teacher salary is too small to pay his bills.

As many countries around the world feel the crunch of an international recession, none is worse off than Zimbabwe. A new figure released by BBC News has price rising to the trillions of Zimbabwean dollars, but one man told BBC today that that number is not even high enough to catch a bus. Citizens have long since been using foreign currencies but the national government has now officially made all foreign currencies legal. The nation is in severe danger of full economic collapse. Couple that with a recent Cholera outbreak and the future looks bleaker still.

Many of us in the West will be laid off this year, companies will cut back and vacations will be skipped until further notice. But while a person may complain about the several thousand jobs lost at his company and the seven percent unemployment in his country, it all becomes very relative when compared with the 80 percent are rising unemployment in Zimbabwe. While some people count pennies, still others have nothing to count. We should not ever, ever forget that.

Quoting Poetically: Rush Limbaugh on Why He Wants Obama to Fail

01limbaughmug1.jpg
Photo: synthstuff.com

“I got a request here from a major American print publication. ‘Dear Rush: For the Obama [Immaculate] Inauguration we are asking a handful of very prominent politicians, statesmen, scholars, businessmen, commentators, and economists to write 400 words on their hope for the Obama presidency. We would love to include you. If you could send us 400 words on your hope for the Obama presidency, we need it by Monday night, that would be ideal.’ Now, we’re caught in this trap again. The premise is, what is your “hope.” My hope, and please understand me when I say this. I disagree fervently with the people on our side of the aisle who have caved and who say, “Well, I hope he succeeds. We’ve got to give him a chance.” Why? They didn’t give Bush a chance in 2000. Before he was inaugurated the search-and-destroy mission had begun. I’m not talking about search-and-destroy, but I’ve been listening to Barack Obama for a year-and-a-half. I know what his politics are. I know what his plans are, as he has stated them. I don’t want them to succeed.” - Rush Limbaugh January 16, 2009

GOP Juggernaut Rush Limbaugh said the above comment about Barack Obama on a January 16 edition of his talk-radio show. He argues that because he does not agree with a great many of Obama’s policies, he wants those to fail. But that kind of failure is quite different the total, unilateral societal collapse which pundits like Limbaugh seem to blame on liberal media and the “liberal agenda.” Sure Obama wants to close Guantanamo Bay’s prisons. Sure he wants affordable healthcare, and a large federal oversight of banks. But then of course, there is reality. Guantanamo detainees will not be just walking the streets; they will in fact be prosecuted, sentenced, executed or shipped out of the country and seperated from their terrorist cohorts in all likelyhood. also, affordable healthcare, Socialist or not is something all people tend to want, and furthermore Obama’s plan is not for government-mandated coverage that makes every citizen a number, but coverage which allows every citizen to be treated. Lastly, the banks’ socialization is indicative of an under-regulated system - if it were not, the word crisis need not apply.

What Limbaugh fails to see is that Obama’s policies are aiming to be 180% distance from those of the Republicans solely because of a certain law of opposites. That is to say, if the previous attempts by the GOP flopped, logic will inform the wise to do the reverse. Thus, America stands at a new place in history in which change may mean all the things you hate, Mr. Limbaugh. But in the name of common sense, what choice do you have? Couple that what Obama’s willingness to hear opposing arguments and actually listen to words of dissent and one may see how the sum of these parts can very likely lead to solutions; and is that not what you want? I should think so, Sir.

Wax for a better America!
