“Stress is like a violin string. If there’s no tension, there’s no music. But if the string is too tight, it breaks. You want to find the right level of tension for you—the level that makes harmony in your life.” - Physician Allen Elkin quoted by Beliefnet.

Allen Elkin, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and the director New York’s Stress anxiety Management and Counseling Center and he is the author of the book Urban Ease: Stress-Free Living in the Big City. Dr. Elkin’s point may be all to simple to understand, and yet, one might find a brilliance to it. It is that final thesis due at the end of the month, the newspaper deadline, bill to pay, or that hope of a Superbowl championship which history has shown to motivate better than any other element since the formation of water. Many thinkers of the past have said the same of stress. From the Biblical writers of Proverbs and James in speaking of building perseverance through adversity, to the fictional but well-written character of Rocky Balboa who reminds moviegoers that the fight is never over until one fighter refuses to get up from the canvas. Each message says that the very basic difference between thought-crippling stress, and inspired motivation is a person’s management of and reaction to each of these challenges as they arrive.
