Waxing Poetically: Addressing Culture with a Twist of Poetry

A FOX News Report today suggests that the failing South Florida economy, i.e. slow job growth, quicker losses and an abysmal housing market, have contributed to some married couples’ being willing to work out their problems. Some others however, as it is suggested in this video, stay married because the alternative is just too expensive (and it is, just ask my parents). and dealing with said problems are just part of the territory so to say.

But before you watch the video, consider these thoughts. If money trouble is keeping a couple together, are they even unhappy enough to be divorced? On the other hand, if money is a couple’s central reason for divorce, why would it make sense to make themselves poorer by paying a lawyer oodles of noodles in cash, prizes and self-respect? Considering all things, this trend could mean that couples will really know if they should be together. For me personally, I credit my parents’ divorce with renewing my relationship with my father that was barely there during my parents married years. But to get to that point a couple must truly know whether divorce is a smart option. With the exception of abuse or continuous infidelity, a trend like this may curb incidence of casual reasons for divorce such as boredom or the ever popular “we have nothing in common” grounds.
