Waxing Poetically: Addressing Culture with a Twist of Poetry

Rather than talk about how Hillary won’t concede to Barack or how gays can get married now in Californ-IA, I thought I’d take a detour for all our sakes…. Thank me later. Instead, I want to make you aware of a song that seems all too salient these days.

I came the song “I Shot Lucifer” nearly ten years ago in my senior year of high school, if I’m not mistaken, and now that Jeremiah Wright’s views about the government’s involvement in the AIDS crisis in the African-American community, the drug trade and “Slick Willie” Clinton “Ridin’ dirty” in office are out on the international airwaves for all to hear, I just wanted to show an example of a similar viewpoint penned nearly a decade before we ever knew anyone named Barack.

This is the Arizona rap metal band Bionic Jive’s song “I Shot Lucifer” in both lyric and video. (Note: I have corrected some spelling errors and such). It is searing with damnation and accusation for America’s darkest underbelly with its every line and is irrefutable evidence that Jeremiah Wright is not alone in his views. Further to Wright’s point, it is a religious gospel song in its content and makes numerous Biblical references all but falling short of “God damn America.”
